O Cocteau Twins foi formado em 1979 na Escócia pelo guitarrista Robin Guthrie, o baixista Will Heggie – que saiu da banda em 1983, cedendo o lugar para Simon Raymonde -, e a vocalista Elizabeth Fraser (namorada de Guthrie) sob influências de artistas como Kraftwerk, David Bowie, Joy Division, Kate Bush e Siouxsie and the Banshees.
A música da banda ganhou repercussão no cenário independente devido ao pop sofisticado que o trio construiu em seus discos, principalmente a partir do disco ‘Treasure’. A canções atmosféricas e a maravilhosa voz de Elizabeth Fraser – cantando letras indecifráveis – contribuíram para a bela e estranha música do grupo.
Cocteau Twins se tornou uma banda ícone da 4AD, e, com seu estilo etéreo, foi uma das percussoras do dream pop. Em 1982, já residindo em Londres, o trio assinou contrato com a gravadora 4AD e lançou o primeiro álbum, ‘Garlands’. Na sequência saíram ‘Head over Heels’ (1983), ‘Treasure’ (1984) e ‘Victorialand’ (1986).

Simon Raymonde, que foi convidado para trabalhar no segundo álbum do This Mortal Coil, não participou das gravação de ‘Victorialand’, um álbum predominantemente acústico que incluiu apenas Guthrie e Fraser. Raymonde retornou ao grupo para ‘The Moon and the Melodies’ (1986), uma colaboração do trio com o compositor americano Harold Budd.
‘Blue Bell Knoll’, o quinto álbum do Cocteau Twins foi lançado em 1988. Dois anos depois, em 1990, saiu ‘Heaven or Las Vegas’, o mais bem sucedido disco do grupo, atingindo o sétimo lugar na parada britânica. ‘Heaven or Las Vegas’ foi o último álbum de estúdio do trio lançada pela 4AD.
Em 1991, a banda se apresentou no Brasil, na cidade de São Paulo, no extinto Projeto SP.
Pela Mercury Records, o grupo lançou seus dois últimos álbuns de estúdio: ‘Four-Calendar Café’ (1993) e ‘Milk and Kisses’ (1996). Em 1997, durante as gravações do que seria o nono disco, o trio se desfez. Em parte, a separação de Guthrie e Fraser foi o principal motivo do fim do Cocteau Twins.
