Earworms 14 January 2019

Lots of contributions to Earworms this week, so thank you all for joining in. I’m in bits … well, not really, but I asked for songs about fragments, and that’s what I got. I think it’s safe to assume that the playlist is eclectic! If you have an earworm you’d like to share, please send an .mp3 or a link to [email protected], together with a few words about why you’ve chosen it. Next week’s theme will be (looks around desperately for inspiration … washing-up bowl? Cat food? Geraniums? Ummm …) HATS. Hats and headgear. Many thanks to all contributors.

DJ Shadow – Building Steam with a Grain of Salt – afictionhabit: DJ Shadow is a genius and his album Endtroducing is a favourite in this house (we have this and others on vinyl and CD).  This and subsequently Product Placement and Brainfreeze which he did with Cut Chemist basically soundtracked my post university years when I was pretending to be an adult and failing miserably.

Alt-J – Every Other Freckle – AliM: “I’m going to bed into you like a cat beds into a beanbag”. I’ve often thought that. Well, not you personally. But to be able to mould ones body into any sort of hollow, like a cat does, as if it had no bones. And to sleep the sleep of a freckled cat.

Hamilton Leithauser – The Smallest Splinter – shoegazer: Singer/Guitarer/Founder of The Walkmen breaking off (see what I did there?) from 4 years or so ago.

Soulsavers – Unbalanced Pieces – glassarfemptee: Soulsavers save my soul with this deep dark song. “The chessboard still has two unbalanced pieces”. But they aren’t referring to Trump & Putin!

Jackie Mittoo – Atom Sounds – afictionhabit: This features on a Studio One album I have called Champion in the Arena 1976 – 1977 which is a Jackie Mittoo compilation.  A beautifully mellow classic Mittoo dub keyboard track. Lovely.

David Lindley – Quarter Of A Man- Ravi Raman: Unique, diverse, eclectic – just some of the terms used to describe the El Rayo X album in which this song figures. A long time favourite.

Clarence ‘Gatemouth’ Brown – Bits and Pieces – Ravi Raman: From his wonderful Gate Swings album. Co-written with Milt Jackson and Gene Krupa.

Hawkwind – Quark, Strangeness and Charm – MaggieB: A quark is a fundamental particle. There are 6 types; up, down, top, bottom, strange and charm. Quark is low fat cream cheese and makes great cheesecake . Hawkwind: Quark, strangeness and charm. (Also nommed by severin, great minds, etc.)

Siouxsie and the Banshees – Pulled to Bits (Live) – severin: The version from their live album, Nocturne, recorded at the Albert Hall. Originally the B-Side of Playground Twist.
