Good morning all, I hope you’re all feeling fortified after the weekend, and ready to listen to your songs about chateaux, castles and fortresses. If you have an earworm you’d like to share, please send an .mp3 or a link to [email protected]., together with a few lines about why you’ve chosen it. Next weeks theme will be running – racing, jogging, Lady Madonna’s stockings, the trots. Many thanks to all contributors!

Asian Dub Foundation – Fortress Europe – shoegazer: (Shoey also suggested Scotland Yard Gospel Choir but as tincanman had already nommed that, I’ve gone with this one. Ed.) See above.

The Avener – feat. Kadebostan – Castle In The Snow – Ravi Raman: I didn’t even know I had this. Searched for Stevie Wonder and found this which I think was passed on via RR/ Spill. Rather good I think.

Beyoncé – Sandcastles – tincanman: Not a great vocal performance but a terrific song that becomes more than it seemed. (The sand castles are only metaphorical, of course, but so are ‘earworms’ 🙂 ).

Queens of the Stone Age – Fortress – afictionhabit: This track is from one of my favourite albums of 2017, in fact one of the songs from it was my Festive ‘Spill 1 that year. This is a lovely track about supporting friends in dark times.

Chris Forsyth & The Solar Motel Band – Castle Rock – AliM: I have no idea who this came from originally, I suspect CaroleB, but I may be wrong. Anyway, I love the way it builds (castellates?) through the track.

Malford Milligan Band – Palace Of The King – Ravi Raman: An excellent cover of the Freddie King song. From their 2006 Rides Again album.

Tyrannosaurus Rex – Chateau in Virginia Waters – severin: “She had a Chateau in Virginia Waters, Free from all those culture vultures”. So that’s ok then. It’s not clear who “she” was but Marc’s friend Elton did live in what is sometimes described as a “mansion/bungalow” in Virginia Water (singular) for some time.

Scotland Yard Gospel Choir – Castles Of Wales – tincanman: I suppose we shouldn’t be surprised at the use of sarcasm from this group considering it is not a choir, doesn’t play gospel, are not police, and none of them is from either Scotland or Wales – or anywhere in the UK, for that matter. They’re from Chicago. Earwormy in a Kinksish way though.

Strawbs – Lady Fuschia – AliM: Well here’s a blast from the past. “Now poised above the castle walls she looks her last on lonely skies …” references the death of Lady Fuschia Groan in “Gormenghast” (Mervyn Peake).

Fairport Convention – Fotheringay – MaggieB: There is a film about Mary, Queen of Scots doing the rounds, which made me think of this song. Mary was beheaded at Fotheringhay Castle. Then again who needs an excuse to listen to Sandy Denny? PS. Does anyone know if the different spelling was deliberate?

Buster Poindexter, The Banshees Of Blue – Castle In Spain – severin: “Ava Gardner, blah blah blah blah”. Buster was an incarnation of David Johansen of the New York Dolls. This unlikely Disney song cover is from the wonderful Stay Awake compilation. The song was originally featured in the film Babes in Toyland.
